Nikolay
Morgunov

Nikolay Morgunov, born in Moscow in 1992, relocated to Barcelona in 2017, where he continues to live and work. His practice is marked by a minimalist approach, combining rigid, predefined grids with chaotic graphic sublayers that appear almost accidental. Transparent structures, similar to lattices, are applied to the surface not to obscure but to reveal the underlying image. Morgunov captures the traces left by human activity, weaving together sensory elements such as sound, color, and movement that define a specific time.

His compositions play with contrast. The precision of straight lines, rarely found in nature, collides with spontaneous brushstrokes made with coal. A third material, transparent resin that resembles a still water surface, softens these tensions and alters the perception of depth. Through these elements, his works evoke cycles of life and abandonment, shifting between clarity and erosion, between freshness and dust.

Morgunov describes his process as a game guided by both strict rules and intuitive responses. His works imitate real patterns while subtly reshaping perception. The question remains: What kind of path are we tracing now?

At the heart of his practice lies a constant inquiry. As he constructs a new piece, he questions whether each new gesture brings the work forward or simply returns it to its origin—the empty surface. This movement between affirmation and refusal allows him to refine his view, searching for greater clarity within a preexisting structure.

He is drawn to the idea that creation has no final point. Monumentality fascinates him, and he seeks to evoke its weight and resonance on a smaller scale, focusing on the relationships between elements and their rhythmic tension in the absence of color. Morgunov believes that through repetition, disconnected parts can begin to function as a whole, where cohesion emerges and the collective takes precedence over the individual.
